Coachability is more important than competency (w/ Adam Bishop)

*team podcast Dec 30, 2021

“For his first 15 years,” Adam says, “I got to work as an assistant coach to several GREAT lead pastors.”

In his mind, his stint as a youth pastor, an executive pastor, a small groups pastor, and more… those roles— with leaders helping him— empowered him to be who he is today.

In fact, Adam is a former staff member of Shawn Lovejoy!

Adam is a coach with Courageous Pastors. And, he understands the value of having a coach speak into your life.

The men he worked for all showed him some great traits he wanted to develop in his life. Yet, he also needed to work at being him.

That’s a great balance, a tension:

  •  Learn the best from others
  •  Be who you are

And, honestly, this is a daily journey…

Following well empowers you to lead well, though. And it’s worth learning from others.

Serving others— and learning from them— empowers you to:

  1. develop skills you wouldn’t otherwise develop
  2. learn from others mistakes, and then side-step them when it’s your time to lead
  3. submit

It’s wise to not always be in charge… and to learn to lean into the wisdom of the Body of Christ.

As well, working FOR others (and WITH others) helps you with COACHABILITY, a refinement that’s necessary  to both grow AND work with others.

As Adam says, “There’s nothing worse than a competent person who can’t be coached.”

Feedback always helps.

Moreover, your intentions are irrelevant. What matters MORE is what people experience.

And that leads you to an opportunity to grow.

Here are three reasons why coach-ability matters:

#1 = things change.

What got you where you are won’t get you to the next chapter… to the next breakthrough, to the next thing.

We’re always growing.

And that means we consistently need people speaking into our life.

#2 = you have 75% of what you need to know figured out; but you need 25% more.

You need the space to talk it out, to get clarity, and to grow deeper….

#3 = only 3% of all people are wired to hear something once and put it into practice.

The rest of us need help implementing it.
